Social Security Administration head resigns after DOGE requests

Michelle King is stepping down from her position after opposing requests from DOGE.

The acting chief of the Social Security Administration, Michelle King, resigned due to requests from the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) to access recipient data, according to multiple reports.

The big picture: King’s departure followed her refusal to provide sensitive information to DOGE staffers, according to The Associated Press.

  • White House spokesperson Harrison Fields stated that President Donald Trump nominated Frank Bisignano to lead the agency, and he is expected to be swiftly confirmed.
  • The news of DOGE seeking access to sensitive data raised concerns as it includes Social Security numbers, Medicare information, and applications for supplemental income programs of about 725 million people.
