San Diego approves $30 million settlement for family of teen killed by police

The city council agreed to one of the largest police shooting settlements in U.S. history.

The San Diego City Council has approved a $30 million settlement for the family of Kanoa Wilson, a 16-year-old Black teen fatally shot by police.

The settlement amount surpasses the $27 million paid by Minneapolis to George Floyd’s family after his murder in 2020.

Driving the news: The incident occurred on January 28, when surveillance and body camera footage showed Wilson running away from gunfire at a downtown train station.

  • As Wilson exited the station, he encountered Officer Daniel Gold, who allegedly fired two shots at Wilson “instantly, without any warning,” striking him in the upper body.
  • The lawsuit brought by Wilson’s family accused the officer and city of excessive force and wrongful death.
