Vice President Kamala Harris has garnered support from more than half of the Democratic delegates needed to secure her party’s nomination for the presidency.
Further, Harris set a new fundraising record by raising $81 million in the first 24 hours after announcing her candidacy.
Driving the news: Top Democratic leaders, including governors and party officials, have backed Harris in their efforts to defeat Republican Donald Trump.
- Following Joe Biden’s announcement to step aside from the race, Harris received endorsements from a range of prominent figures, such as Govs. Wes Moore, Gretchen Whitmer, J.B. Pritzker, and Andy Beshear, as well as support from House Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi.
The big picture: According to a report from the Associated Press, Harris has received the support of over 1,200 pledged delegates.
- That’s a majority of the 1,976 delegates needed at the Democratic National Convention.
- Harris inherited Biden’s political operation and a substantial war chest, standing at nearly $96 million by the end of June, with an additional $81 million raised in the first 24 hours post-endorsement.
