Pizza Hut to close 250 stores as Yum Brands considers sale

Amid declining sales and increased competition, Pizza Hut’s parent company Yum Brands is shutting down hundreds of underperforming locations and weighing the future of the iconic restaurant brand.

Pizza Hut will close 250 underperforming U.S. restaurants in the first half of this year.

Parent company Yum Brands is conducting a formal review and considering selling the Pizza Hut brand.

Driving the news: Pizza Hut currently has over 6,000 locations in the U.S., but sales have struggled in recent years.

  • U.S. same-store sales at Pizza Hut dropped 5% last year, while rival Domino’s reported a 2.7% increase for most of the year.
  • Internationally, Pizza Hut’s performance is stronger, with same-store sales up 1% last year, especially in Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America.
  • China represents Pizza Hut’s second-largest market outside the U.S., accounting for 19% of its sales.
  • Pizza Hut ended 2025 with 19,974 stores worldwide, having opened nearly 1,200 new locations across 65 countries, but closures outpaced new openings.

What we’re watching: The company plans additional global openings in 2026, though specific details were not disclosed.
