Meta settles with Texas for $1.4 billion

The technology giant was under fire for its unauthorized use of biometric data.

Meta has reached a $1.4 billion settlement with Texas in a privacy lawsuit related to the unauthorized use of biometric data of users without their consent.

This settlement represents the largest amount secured by a single state in similar cases, per Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton.

Driving the news: The lawsuit, filed in 2022, accused Meta of violating a state law prohibiting the capture or sale of a resident’s biometric information without their consent, such as their face or fingerprint.

  • Meta had previously announced the shutdown of its face-recognition system and the deletion of faceprints of over 1 billion people amidst increasing concerns about the technology’s potential misuse.
