Marco Rubio is no longer serving as the acting archivist of the United States, according to a National Archives spokesman.
The national archivist oversees government records and leads the National Archives, which was at the center of controversy after it alerted the Justice Department about Trump’s handling of classified documents in 2022.
Driving the news: President Trump fired former U.S. Archivist Colleen Shogan within weeks of taking office and appointed Rubio as the acting head, adding to Rubio’s multiple high-profile roles.
- He played key roles in Trump’s policies toward Venezuela, the dismantling of USAID, and the crackdown on pro-Palestinian protesters via visa and green card revocations.
The big picture: Rubio stepped down from the National Archives position to comply with the Federal Vacancies Reform Act, which limits the duration someone can serve in an acting capacity in Senate-confirmed posts.
- James Byron, who was a senior adviser to the archivist, has taken over Rubio’s duties at the National Archives.
