Nearly two-thirds of Democrats think President Joe Biden should drop out of the presidential race to allow another candidate to face former President Donald Trump.
The results are from a new survey from the AP-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research.
The big picture: The survey also found that about 3 in 10 Democrats are extremely or very confident in Biden’s mental capability to effectively serve as president, a slight decrease from a previous poll in February.
- The survey results highlight the challenges faced by the 81-year-old President as he endeavors to counter calls within his party to step down and convince Democrats that he is the best candidate to oppose Trump in the presidential race.
- The poll was mostly conducted before a recent assassination attempt on Trump at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania, and it’s unclear whether this event influenced people’s views of Biden.
Go deeper: The survey indicated that Black Democrats are among Biden’s strongest supporters, with approximately half in favor of his continued candidacy, compared to around 3 in 10 white and Hispanic Democrats.
- The poll also revealed that about 6 in 10 Americans desire President Trump to withdraw from the race, with relatively few Republicans supporting this sentiment.
- Vice President Kamala Harris was subject to additional scrutiny, with her favorability rating similar to Biden’s, but with somewhat lower unfavorability compared to Biden.
