Google updates Gulf of America on Maps

Google Maps now shows the Gulf of America name for people in the United States.

Google has officially updated the name of the Gulf of America from the Gulf of Mexico.

The change follows President Trump’s directive to rename the gulf on Jan 20, his first day in office, to include America’s name.

The big picture: Users in the U.S. will now see the Gulf of America on Google Maps, while users in Mexico will still see the name Gulf of Mexico.

  • Users elsewhere in the world will see both names written as the Gulf of Mexico and the Gulf of America.
  • President Trump officially made Feb 9 Gulf of America Day and acknowledged the name change in remarks.

What he’s saying: “Today, I am making my first visit to the Gulf of America since its renaming,” Trump said in a statement on Sunday. “As my Administration restores American pride in the history of American greatness, it is fitting and appropriate for our great Nation to come together and commemorate this momentous occasion and the renaming of the Gulf of America.”
