Google announced it would adjust its map names for the Gulf of Mexico and Denali in alignment with U.S. government decisions.
The big picture: Following President Donald Trump’s directive to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America and revert Mount McKinley to its original name, Google will only modify its maps after the government officially updates the names.
- The company adheres to the practice of implementing name changes once they are reflected in official government sources, such as the Geographic Names Information System containing data for numerous U.S. geographic entities.
Driving the news: “Denali,” the preferred name for the mountain by Alaska Natives, was reinstated by former President Barack Obama in 2015 after being known as “McKinley” in tribute to President William McKinley since the late 19th century.
