GM recalls nearly 450,000 SUVs and trucks

The vehicles are being recalled for brake fluid issues.

General Motors has issued a recall for 449,671 full-size SUVs and trucks due to a brake fluid issue.

The recall is related to a glitch in the electronic control module that may fail to illuminate the check brake fluid light in the instrument cluster in case of a leak or compromise to the brake fluid.

Driving the news: If the warning light does not work, a loss of brake fluid can be detected by more brake pedal travel and less stopping power. A red brake light may appear if there is a total loss of brake fluid.

  • The affected vehicles include various models of Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra, Chevrolet Tahoe, Chevrolet Suburban, GMC Yukon, GMC Yukon XL, Cadillac Escalade, and Cadillac Escalade ESV from the years 2023-2024.
  • GM is offering a free software update to fix the issue, which can be done at dealer service centers or downloaded by owners who have opted in to over-the-air updates.
  • No crashes or injuries have been reported due to the brake fluid issue.
  • Owners will receive notification of the update by mail by Oct 28, and the fix is covered under warranty whether updated at home or at a Chevy dealer.
