Democrats block AOC from being top Democrat on powerful committee

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez will not be the ranking Democrat on the House Oversight Committee.

Progressive Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D–NY) lost her bid to become the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee to Rep.

Rep. Gerry Connolly (D–VA) secured 131 votes while Ocasio-Cortez received 84 votes, marking a blow for progressives who supported her.

What they’re saying: Following his election by the House Democratic Caucus, Connolly expressed gratitude for the support and confidence placed in him to lead House Democrats on the Oversight Committee.

  • He pledged to counter Republican gaslighting and combat debunked conspiracy theories.
  • Connolly emphasized the need for Democrats to be prepared for potential conflicts with the Trump administration, stating that he was “raring to go” and had previous experience in dealing with the administration during his four years in office.
  • “This will be trench warfare,” Connolly said. “Now is not the time to be timid. I promise the American people that our Committee Democrats will be a beacon of truth and prepared from day one to counter Republican gaslighting.”
