The CDC has reported a death in New York linked to a listeria outbreak associated with recalled Boar’s Head deli meat.
A total of 59 people have been hospitalized with the outbreak strain of bacteria in 19 states, with 10 fatalities reported so far.
The big picture: The CDC notes that the actual number of cases could be higher due to various reasons, such as delayed onset of symptoms and underreporting of cases.
- Boar’s Head said te listeria outbreak has been a “dark moment” in the company’s history and announced discontinuation of sales of its liverwurst due to listeria contamination.
- The company has taken steps including the closure of the Virginia plant responsible for the contaminated products and implementation of a companywide food safety program.
- The facility in Jarratt, Virginia, has not been operational since July when the liverwurst recall was initiated and eventually extended to all products from the plant.
