Fresno State basketball players placed bets on their own stats, according to a report from ESPN.
One of the former players, Mykell Robinson, reportedly bet on the under for his stats, meaning would make money if he underperformed his betting lines.
The backstory: Last week multiple reports stated that Fresno State had received a tip about potential sports gambling on the men’s basketball team, leading to the NCAA launching an investigation.
- Fresno State announced that guards Jalen Weaver and Zaon Collins were suspended from the team while the university investigated “an eligibility matter.”
- Former Bulldog Mykell Robinson had been removed from the team earlier in the season and was also reportedly under investigation by the NCAA.
The big picture: According to an ESPN report on Friday, Weaver – who was removed from the team this week – placed a bet on a daily fantasy site.
- Weaver told ESPN that he bet $50 that he would score over 11 points on the fantasy site Sleeper for Fresno State’s game against New Mexico on Dec. 31. Weaver scored 13 points in the 103-89 loss.
- ESPN also reported that Robinson bet on daily fantasy sites for Fresno State games that he played in, including times where he bet the under on his points and rebounds.
- Collins was still on the roster as of Friday afternoon.
What they’re saying: Weaver spoke to ESPN, saying he made a bad decision in placing bets.
- “I just made a bad decision, and I shouldn’t even have gotten involved with that,” Weaver said. “Now, I’m obviously paying for it. I bet on a game I played in, but I never tried to sabotage the season. I never bet on us to lose, never bet my unders.”
