DeBoer brings in four assistants, two to go

Fresno State head football coach Kalen DeBoer announced four additions to the assistant coaching staff on Monday.

The new assistants are defensive coordinator/linebackers coach William Inge, running backs coach/assistant head coach/run game coordinator Lee Marks, safeties coach Chuck Morrell and defensive line/special teams coordinator Eric Schmidt.

Inge follows DeBoer from Indiana, where he was for seven seasons. He spent his first five years as the linebackers coach and served as the special teams coordinator the last two seasons.

Marks joins the Bulldogs after coaching for six seasons at Boise State, his alma mater. He started off as a member of Boise State’s strength and conditioning staff before serving as the running backs coach for five seasons.

The Broncos had a 1,000-yard rusher all five years that Marks coached the position.

Morrell makes the jump to Fresno State from Montana Tech, where he was the head coach for the last nine seasons. He previously was the defensive coordinator and assistant head coach at Sioux Falls from 1998-2009, coaching alongside DeBoer from 2000 on.

Schmidt comes to the Bulldogs after six seasons as the defensive coordinator at North Dakota. From 2008-20013, he coached in various capacities for Southern Illinois, including defensive line coach and special teams coordinator. DeBoer was the offensive coordinator at Southern Illinois from 2010-2013.

Ryan Grubb, Kirby Moore, Roman Sapolu and J.D. Williams return to Fresno State for another season.

Grubb will continue to serve as the offensive coordinator, but he will also coach quarterbacks in 2020.

Moore is back as the wide receivers coach, and he will also be the passing-game coordinator.

Sapolu served as assistant offensive line coach last season and will drop the assistant title in 2020. He also adds run game coordinator – alongside Marks – to his responsibilities.

Williams, a former standout at cornerback for the Bulldogs, will be the cornerbacks coach and defensive passing game coordinator. He spent the last three seasons as the secondary coach.

DeBoer still has two positions to fill. Fresno State announced that there is an ongoing national search for one more assistant on each side of the ball.
