Chowchilla’s Asterisk Talley comes in second at August National Women’s Amateur

After a top 10 finish last year in her debut, Talley improved on her performance to nearly win the entire tournament.

A 16-year-old from Chowchilla finished second at the Augusta National Women’s Amateur over the weekend.

Asterisk Talley, who turned heads as a 15-year-old during last year’s tournament, shot 11-under par to finish just one shot behind Carla Bernat Escuder, 21, of Spain.

How it happened: Talley entered the final round on Sunday two strokes off the lead and got off to a great start, hitting an eagle on the first hole.

  • That was the first time anyone ever eagled a par-4 in the final round of the tournament.
  • She went on to hit four-under on Sunday to nearly come away with the championship, hitting 17 of 18 greens in regulation during the round.
  • Talley finished Round 1 last week with a score of 71, sitting near the middle of the pack before going on a tear over the next two rounds, hitting 66 and 68, respectively.

Flashback: Last year Talley made her Augusta National Women’s Amateur debut, finishing eighth.

What she’s saying: “I think it tells me that I can play against anybody, and I don’t have to be scared of any course or anybody in the field,” Talley said, according to Augusta National Women’s Golf. “Just knowing that this is one of the most crazy courses and it’s so hilly and hard to play, but knowing that I played well here against the best people in the world is something that I’m going to take with me.”
