Diamond ‘Dogs predicted to finish second in Mountain West

The Diamond ‘Dogs are entering their second year under Coach Overland.

Fresno State Baseball has been picked to finish second in the Mountain West in 2024. 

The Diamond ‘Dogs also had three players named as Preseason All-Mountain West selections. 

Preseason poll

The Mountain West preseason coaches poll has Fresno State finishing second behind San Jose State. 

  • Two coaches selected the Diamond ‘Dogs as the conference’s top team. 
  • Fresno State is followed by Air Force, the only other team to receive a first place vote. 
  • Fresno State is coming off a 30-27 2023 season, including a 16-14 record in Mountain West play in the first season under Head Coach Ryan Overland. 
  • The Diamond ‘DOgs have added 18 players to the 20 that are returning in 2024. 

Preseason All-Conference Team

Third baseman Murf Gray, utilityman and pitcher Tommy Hopfe and pitcher Jake Dixon were named to the Preseason All-Conference Team. 

  • Gray was the Mountain West Freshman of the Year in 2023, as he slashed .297/.338/.495 with 8 home runs. 
  • Hopfe led the team with a .321 batting average and a .592 slugging percentage, leading the team with 70 hits. He also had a 4.87 ERA on the mound with 21 strikeouts in 20.1 innings pitched. 
  • Dixon had his season cut short last year after just eight appearances due to injury, but he struck out 42 batters in 40.2 innings and only allowed 6 walks.
