Christian McCaffrey has signed a two-year contract extension with the San Francisco 49ers.
The reigning Offensive Player of the Year is now under contract through 2027.
Driving the news: The two-year contract extension with McCaffrey is reported to be worth $19 million per year.
- Since being acquired in a trade midway through the 2022 season, McCaffrey has significantly impacted San Francisco’s offense, accumulating 2,205 rushing yards, 20 rushing touchdowns, 1,028 receiving yards, and 11 receiving touchdowns in 27 games for the Niners.
- The exceptional performance by McCaffrey in the previous season resulted in leading the NFL with 2,023 yards from scrimmage and being tied for the league lead with 21 touchdowns.
What they’re saying: While McCaffrey was already the highest paid running back in the NFL, he hopes his extension helps set a precedent for other running backs around the league.
- “I think it’s really important,” McCaffrey told the media Tuesday. “Running back has been undervalued for a long time now. Hopefully this is a step in the right direction.”
- Head coach Kyle Shanahan shot down any concerns about paying McCaffrey – who turns 28 on Friday – into his 30s.
- “When you look at Christian, just as an individual, I’m not going him to compare anybody else,” Shanahan said. “Christian is one of the more talented people I’ve ever been around in my life. But if I didn’t speak about that, I’d say he’s almost the biggest overachiever I’ve been around in my life in terms of how obsessive he is with every little thing.”
