Veterans Boulevard officially opens for traffic

The city celebrated Veterans Boulevard opening on Monday.

Veterans Boulevard is finally open in northwest Fresno.

Driving the news: The City of Fresno held a grand opening ceremony on Monday for the Veterans Boulevard overpass.

  • Monday’s ceremony capped a project that has been decades in the work as the 2.5-mile, $140 million project is now complete.
  • Veterans Boulevard should allow commuters an easier time around Highway 99 near Herndon Ave. and Shaw Ave. as traffic and freight train delays should be alleviated.
  • Funding came from state and local funds, including Measure C.

What they’re saying: “Veterans Boulevard will provide a sufficient east-west connection for those living west of the 99 freeway, often referred to as the forgotten part of Fresno,” said Mayor Jerry Dyer, “We are here today collectively to say that is a part of Fresno, that will be forgotten no more.”
