Soria pitches bill to regulate speed of reckless drivers

People convicted of reckless driving could soon have speed limiting technology installed in their vehicles.

Asm. Esmeralda Soria (D–Fresno) is proposing a bill to require speed limiters on cars driven by people convicted of reckless driving.

Soria introduced the proposal, Assembly Bill 2276, into the Legislature last week.

The big picture: If AB 2276 passes, it would establish a pilot program that will require reckless speeders to install active Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA) devices in their vehicles.

  • The pilot program would run for five years and would require ISA devices for drivers convicted of reckless driving and speeding over 100 miles per hour.

What they’re saying: Soria said there needs to be a constant effort to keep California’s streets safe.

  • “Twelve people are killed every day on California’s roads, and one-third of those fatalities are speeding-related,” Soria said. “Speeding not only increases the likelihood of a crash; it also dramatically increases the severity of injuries when collisions occur. AB 2276 will help to save lives and hold those who recklessly speed accountable.”
  • Joe Martinez, a member of Families for Safe Streets Fresno, lost his 21-year-old son to a speeding driver. “AB 2276 sends a clear message: If you put lives at risk by speeding, you will need anti-speeding technology to manage your dangerous behavior,” Martinez said. “We are grateful to Assemblymember Soria for introducing this bill and helping California act to prevent reckless driving before another family’s life is destroyed.”
