Richardson builds on lead in District 6 race

Thousands of ballots have been processed for the northeast Fresno City Council seat, giving Nick Richardson a little breathing room in the close race.

Nick Richardson has extended his lead for District 6 on the Fresno City Council, according to the latest update from Tuesday evening.

Roger Bonakdar had cut into Richardson’s lead late last week, but new ballots over the past four days have broken Richardson’s way.

The big picture: Richardson leads Bonakdar 50.98% to 48.80% in the race to succeed Garry Bredefeld on the city council.

  • With over 27,500 votes counted in the race so far, Richardson leads by 599 votes.

Flashback: Last Friday’s update had Bonakdar cutting the deficit to trail Richardson by 259 votes.

State of play: Fresno County processed around 50,000 ballots from last Friday through Tuesday, with around 4,500 of them coming from voters in District 6.

What we’re watching: Fresno County estimates that it still has 49,200 ballots to process. It is unclear how many remain from voters in District 6.

Zoom out: Bredefeld and fellow Councilman Luis Chavez continue to hold effectively insurmountable leads in their respective races for the Fresno County Board of Supervisors.

  • Bredefeld leads District 2 Supervisor Steve Brandau 54.28% to 45.14%, up by nearly 6,000 votes.
  • Chavez leads District 3 Supervisor Sal Quintero 55.65% to 43.89, up by over 3,000 votes.
