Republicans target Gray, Salas over gas tax

People throughout the Central Valley will see new advertisements hitting Adam Gray and Rudy Salas over California’s gas tax.

Republicans are launching an aggressive advertising campaign against two Democratic Congressional candidates in the Central Valley as California’s gas tax increased once again on Monday.

The National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) announced that it has paid for digital advertising and billboards in the 13th and 22nd Congressional Districts.

The big picture: The advertisements started to go up throughout both districts on Monday, taking fire at former Assemblymembers Adam Gray (D–Merced) and Rudy Salas (D–Bakersfield).

  • Gray supported Senate Bill 1 in 2017 to increase the gas tax, while Salas skipped four votes that would have suspended the tax.
  • California’s gas tax increased by two cents on Monday, totalling $0.60 per gallon.

What they’re saying: “It is reprehensible that self-serving Sacramento politicians Rudy Salas and Adam Gray have no problem attacking hardworking Californians’ wallets by supporting continuing to increase taxes while folks struggle to put food on the table,” said NRCC Spokesperson Ben Petersen. “We will make sure voters know who is responsible for their shrinking wallets.”
