Fresno Unified School District Trustee Elizabeth Jonasson Rosas is running for the Fresno City Council.
Jonasson Rosas announced Wednesday that she is running for the District 5 seat, which will be vacated by her husband Luis Chavez.
The big picture: Jonasson Rosas was elected to the FUSD Board of Trustees in 2016 to represent the Roosevelt High School area.
- Along with her work on the board, Jonasson Rosas also works at Westlands Water District as the Deputy General Manager of External Affairs.
- She has also worked for the Fresno Economic Opportunities Commission, Fresno State and the California High-Speed Rail Authority, among other organizations.
State of play: Chavez, who has represented District 5 since 2017, won election to District 3 on the Fresno County Board of Supervisors last month, meaning the City Council will have a vacancy when his term with the county starts in January.
What we’re watching: The Fresno City Council will set a special election for Chavez’s seat once he resigns to head to the county.
What she’s saying: “I am proud to call Southeast Fresno my home, and I’m excited to bring my vision for a stronger, safer, and more prosperous city to the Fresno City Council,” Jonasson Rosas said. “As a foster parent, non-profit volunteer, business leader, and school board member, I have worked tirelessly to serve the most disadvantaged neighborhoods of Fresno, and I’m ready to take that same passion and commitment to city hall as your next City Councilmember. Together, we can create lasting positive change in our neighborhoods.”
