Fresno Supervisor faces heat for campaigning on County property

Use of government property for political campaigns is strictly prohibited, per Fresno County rules. One Supervisor apparently flaunted it.

Fresno County Supervisor Sal Quintero is facing heat for installing a large campaign sign outside of a county building.

Former Fresno City Council candidate Justin St. George filed a complaint with Fresno County Counsel Daniel Cederborg last week alleging the use of political signage violations of County ordinances.

The big picture: Quintero has a campaign sign placed outside of the Fresno County Department of Social Services located in Clovis.

  • The sign is located on the northwest corner of Peach and Dakota Avenues near Fresno Yosemite International Airport.
  • Quintero is running against his former staffer and current Fresno City Councilman Luis Chavez for reelection in district three, which covers south and central Fresno.

Why it matters: Fresno County’s Code of Ordinances prohibits elected officials from using county property or facilities under their control for political activity connected to elections.

  • Section 3.08.110(A)(3) bars a county official or employee from the following: “Knowingly permit any county premises, property or facility under his control to be entered or used for any political activity in connection with any election.”

What they’re saying: St. George wrote in his letter to Cederborg that he demands the county investigate how Quintero placed the sign on county property.

  • “At a time when the integrity of our elections are repeatedly under question, it is imperative that all county officials uphold the ordinances in place to maintain the integrity and neutrality of county properties,” St. George wrote. “As a Veteran, this issue is deeply personal for me.”
