DeSantis kicks off 2024 courting with Fresno Co. fundraising swing

Valley GOP donors will have an opportunity to hear from DeSantis in person as he pitches his vision for the country.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is headed to Fresno County later this month for a major campaign fundraiser mere weeks after launching his bid.

This will be DeSantis’s first swing through the Central Valley ahead of next year’s presidential primary election and the first of any 2024 GOP contender hoping to take on President Joe Biden.

The big picture: DeSantis will sit down for lunch with Republican donors on June 19, which is hosted by John Harris and Karen and Richard Spencer.

Why it matters: DeSantis will be the first Republican presidential candidate to hold a fundraiser in the early stages of the election.

  • The pair of local GOP luminaries previously backed President Donald Trump when he ran in 2016 and 2020.
  • However, with the first primary elections not until next spring, the group is eyeing to bring other GOP candidates including South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott and former South Carolina Governor and United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley.

What we’re watching: California will hold its presidential primary on March 5, 2024 – one of the earliest primaries in the nation, giving the Golden State significant power in determining the GOP nominee.
