Brandon Vang nears outright win for Fresno City Council seat

The Sanger Unified trustee would be the first Hmong representative on the Fresno City Council in ten years, if elected.

Sanger Unified trustee Brandon Vang is near to capturing Fresno’s lone open City Council seat, representing southeast Fresno, to succeed now-Fresno County Supervisor Luis Chavez.

Vang closed out Tuesday night’s special election with 1,859 votes – or 50.5% of the vote – against a four-person field headlined by Fresno Unified school trustee Elizabeth Jonasson Rosas.

Here’s a look at the results: Jonasson pulled in 1,262 votes as of the final update on Tuesday night, accounting for 34.56%.

  • Barraza won 449 votes, or 12.2% of the total vote. Paul Condon earned 92 votes, or 2.5 percent of the vote. 9 votes were written in, accounting for 0.24%.

What’s next? Per the Fresno County Clerk’s office, 580 ballots are currently in-hand awaiting processing. Additional ballots postmarked effective Tuesday and received by March 25 could also determine whether Vang secures an outright victory or forces a run-off election.

  • Presently, 110 additional vote-by-mail ballots are either missing a voter signature or do not match DMV signatures on-file, but can be cured by the voter before certification.
