People have received letters claiming they have tested positive for HIV and other sexually transmitted infections.

People in Merced County have been receiving fake letters saying they have tested positive for sexually transmitted infections.

The Merced County Department of Public Health released a warning on Friday telling residents to beware of the counterfeit letters.

Driving the news: The letters being sent out are on counterfeit Merced County Department of Public Health letterhead.

  • The letters tell people they have tested positive for HIV, syphilis and chlamydia.

The big picture: Merced County posted a community alert on Facebook advising people that the letters are fake.

  • “While the purpose and origin of these phony letters is unknown, please be aware that they are not being issued by Merced County,” the county said. “Confidential medical information is never disclosed by Merced County Public Health via mailed letters. While letters are sometimes mailed out, they will only request a return phone call from the recipient without divulging details.”
