Two students arrested in Mariposa for sex crimes

Mariposa County High School’s head basketball coach was also arrested for not reporting the alleged crimes.

Two basketball players and the head coach at Mariposa County High School have been arrested for their involvement in a sex scandal.

The two students were arrested on multiple sex crimes, while the coach, Pierce Chaney, was arrested for felony child abuse and failure to report as a mandated reporter.

The big picture: The Mariposa County Sheriff’s Office announced the arrests last Friday, declining to name the two students since they are minors.

  • While Chaney was arrested, he is not facing any sex charges as the two students are.
  • Investigators did not reveal any specifics about the alleged sex crimes.

What they’re saying: “We continue working closely with the Mariposa County School District to ensure student safety and protect the victims and witnesses involved,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement. “This is still an active case as we continue to investigate. Due to this case involving juveniles, no additional details can be released.”
