Madera County’s transportation tax appears on track to pass, although there are still thousands of ballots left to count.

Measure T, a half-cent sales tax to support transportation projects, is currently up by around 2,000 votes, according to the latest results.

The big picture: Measure T currently has 52.38% support, compared to 47.62% of the vote in opposition.

  • The raw vote total comes out to 22,454 “yes” votes and 20,413 “no” votes, a difference of 2,041 votes.

What we’re watching: Madera County estimated Friday afternoon that it still has 10,700 ballots that need to be processed.

  • That includes 8,700 vote-by-mail ballots that were received on or before election day, 750 ballots that were received after election day, 50 provisional ballots, 1,000 conditional voter registration provisional ballots and 200 other ones which are damaged, need to be remade or require further review.
  • The next update will be issued on Nov. 13.

Driving the news: Measure T would extend the county’s half-cent transportation tax for 20 years.

  • It is projected to generate around $22 million annually, totalling $440 million over 20 years.
  • The last iteration of Measure T, which was approved in 2006, has generated around $170 million so far for Madera County and is projected to bring in $219 million by the end of its lifetime in 2027.
