Romanian national guilty of card skimming in Fresno, Madera

Federal officials announced that the Romanian man will spend a year and a half in prison.

A Romanian national was sentenced to prison in federal court on Friday for card skimming in Fresno and Madera Counties. 

The big picture: The Department of Justice announced that Christos Mavrokelos, 37, was sentenced to 18 months in prison and ordered to pay $75,000 in restitution. 

  • Mavrokelos was convicted of using counterfeit debit cards and skimming devices from July 2021 through November 2023 in Fresno and Madera Counties. 
  • He used counterfeit debit cards that maintained stolen account information to make unauthorized cash withdrawals from the victims’ accounts. 
  • Account information was stolen through the use of skimming devices. 
  • Mavrokelos stole from at least 40 victims, totaling around $149,000 in total loss.
