Fresno strikes deal with Vrbo to collect taxes

The short-term rental app joins Airbnb in collecting hotel taxes for the City of Fresno.

Short-term rental app Vrbo will now collect Fresno’s transient occupancy tax from users.

The Fresno City Council unanimously approved an agreement with Vrbo on Thursday to have the vacation rental service collect the tax on behalf of the city.

The backstory: Last year the City Council amended city code to include internet-based rental platforms such as Vrbo as an “operator.”

  • That requires online platforms to collect and remit the 12% transient occupancy tax to the city.

The big picture: Vrbo will collect the tax for any users who stay in Fresno for 30 consecutive days or less.

  • Vrbo required this agreement with the city to begin collecting the tax.
  • Once the agreement takes effect on Nov. 1, the transient occupancy tax will be included in the list of fees that Vrbo includes on its listings.
