Driving the news: On Wednesday, Fresno Police officers were assisting city code enforcement and state officials in conducting compliance checks at several smoke shops.

  • During the compliance check at Royal T Smoke Shop at 3316 E. McKinley Ave., officers found that Mayberry was wanted for the recent shooting.
  • Mayberry is the owner of Royal T Smoke Shop.
  • Officers searched for evidence and found 1,156.9 grams of marijuana, drug sales records, $2,544, two handguns – one of which was modified to fire fully automatic – and a ballistic vest.
  • Detectives interviewed Mayberry and arrested him on two felonies for assault with a deadly weapon and possession of a machine gun, and two misdemeanors for possession of large capacity magazines and possession for marijuana sales.

What they’re saying: “I applaud the efforts of the police department and City Attorney’s office for their ongoing inspection and enforcement efforts of illegal smoke shops operating in our city,” Mayor Jerry Dyer said. “The illicit sales of marijuana at these smoke shops, along with other criminal activity makes it extremely difficult for legal cannabis dispensaries to be successful. The message for smoke shop owners operating illegally is simple, get out of the mairjuana business or go to jail. It’s your choice.”
