Fresno man sent to prison for possessing 100 pounds of fentanyl

The man tried to hide hundreds of thousands of fentanyl pills in a spare tire.

A Fresno man was sentenced to 10 years in prison for possessing over 100 pounds of fentanyl and nearly 40 pounds of cocaine. 

Driving the news: The U.S. Department of Justice announced that Carlos Lopez, 29, will spend a decade behind bars for possessing with intent to distribute around 107 pounds of fentanyl and around 39 pounds of cocaine. 

  • Lopez was stopped for a traffic infraction on Sep. 8, 2023, while driving northbound on Interstate 5 near Shields Ave. in Fresno County. 
  • Law enforcement found a spare tire in Lopez’s truck that was loaded with 28 packages that contained around 485,000 fentanyl pills. Officers also discovered a bag that had 18 bricks of cocaine.
