Fresno hires search firm to find next police chief

The city will hold four virtual community meetings this month to hear what Fresno residents want from the next chief.

The City of Fresno is making progress in the search for its next police chief.

Fresno Mayor Jerry Dyer and City Manager Georgeanne White announced Thursday that the city has selected a firm to conduct the nationwide search for the next chief.

The big picture: Public Sector Search and Consulting, which specializes exclusively in the recruitment of police executives, will begin the search immediately.

  • Public Sector Search and Consulting is located in Rocklin and is composed of several former police chiefs.
  • The recruiter has led around 80 searches across the country since 2016.

What we’re watching: Along with the search firm, the city has scheduled community meetings to hear from residents about what they would like to see in the next chief.

  • The four scheduled meetings will be held online and will take place on Oct. 18, Oct. 19, Oct. 22 and Oct. 23.
  • The city also plans to send out a community survey next week.

Flashback: Fresno has been without a permanent police chief since Paco Balderrama resigned in June after conducting an affair with an officer’s wife.

  • Deputy Chief Mindy Casto has served as the interim chief since Balderrama’s exit.
