Former Sanger cop convicted of sexual assault while in uniform

The former police officer committed the assaults while on the job.

A former Sanger police officer has been found guilty of sexually assaulting four women that he met during the course of his job.

J. DeShawn Torrence, 42 was convicted of eight counts of deprivation of Constitutional rights for a list of offenses including kidnapping, aggravated sexual abuse, attempted aggravated sexual abuse and bodily injury.

Driving the news: Torrence kidnapped a 21-year-old woman who was walking to a store to buy groceries for her young children. He drove her out of town in his police car and sexually assaulted her at an isolated dead end, according to the Department of Justice.

  • The second victim was a 67-year-old woman who he raped after following her into her home during a DUI investigation.
  • Torrence showed up to the third victim’s home in his police uniform after midnight, pinned her against the kitchen counter and sexually assaulted her.
  • He showed up multiple times at the home of the fourth victim, who was already a victim of domestic violence, under the pretense of investigating the domestic violence incident. During the visits, Torrence forced the victim to expose herself for no legitimate reason and sexually assaulted her.

What we’re watching: Torrence is scheduled to be sentenced on May 7.

  • He faces a maximum of life in prison and a $250,000 fine for five counts.
  • The other counts each carry a maximum of one year in prison and a fine of up to $100,000.

What they’re saying: “Law enforcement officers are entrusted with great power to protect the public and keep them safe from harm,” said Acting U.S. Attorney Michele Beckwith. “This officer’s crimes were an egregious breach of that trust and an appalling abuse of power, as he repeatedly preyed on the women in his community and violated their civil rights. We stand ready to investigate and prosecute such crimes with all the tools we have available.”
