Dyer gives Canelo Alvarez key to the city

Alvarez was presented with the award during the Fresno Area Hispanic Foundation’s gala.

Mexican boxer Canelo Alvarez was gifted the Key to the City of Fresno on Friday.

Alvarez was at Table Mountain Casino on Friday for a gala hosted by the Fresno Area Hispanic Foundation.

The big picture: Mayor Jerry Dyer was not in attendance on Friday because he was at the U.S. Conference of Mayors in Kansas City, so City Manager Georgeanne White presented Alvarez with the key.

  • Proceeds from the gala support programs offered by the Fresno Area Hispanic Foundation.
  • The event celebrated over 30,000 small businesses that are impacted by the foundation.
  • Alvarez spoke to 1,000 guests as the gala’s keynote speaker.

What they’re saying: “Congratulations to Canelo Álvarez, a champion in every sense of the word, who received the Key to the City of Fresno tonight at the Fresno Area Hispanic Foundation Night of Champions gala,” Dyer posted on Facebook.

  • Dyer continued, “I was disappointed to not be able to be there tonight to celebrate your accomplishments, as I’m at a US Mayors conference in Kansas City, but I was happy to have City Manager Georgeanne White present our most prestigious award to a world champion. Congratulations, Canelo!”
