DA charges Kingsburg Councilwoman Jewel Hurtado with DUI

Prosecutors opted to file charges against the 22-year-old Kingsburg lawmaker after a June arrest by CHP officers.

Kingsburg Councilwoman Jewel Hurtado is now facing three misdemeanor charges related to a drunken driving incident in late June, the Fresno County District Attorney announced on Monday.

Prosecutors charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, driving at .08 percent blood-alcohol content or higher, and speeding greater than 65 miles per hour.

The speeding charge is an infraction, akin to a speeding ticket, rather than a misdemeanor.

Hurtado was stopped by CHP officers at Shaw Ave. and Highway 41 in the early hours of June 21.

She underwent a pair of breath tests at 2:18 a.m. and 2:21 a.m., according to a CHP arrest report.

If convicted on all charges, Hurtado faces a maximum penalty of 6 months in county jail.

She is scheduled for arraignment on Oct. 15.

Hurtado was one of two progressive, LGBT millennial elected officials in the Valley cited for driving under the influence in late spring and early summer.

The other, Wasco Mayor Alex Garcia, has pleaded not guilty to charges filed by the Kern County District Attorney.
