Cantwell-Copher launches reelection campaign for Fresno Co. Superintendent

The 2026 race features a high-profile challenger for Fresno County’s top education job.

Fresno County Superintendent of Schools Michele Cantwell-Copher officially launched her bid for reelection on Wednesday.

Cantwell-Copher is seeking a second term in office after being first elected in 2022.

Driving the news: The Fresno County Office of Education oversees the 34 school districts in the county, with over 230,000 students.

  • Cantwell-Copher had been supported by former Superintendent Jim Yovino when she ran for the position four years ago.

State of the race: Former Clovis Unified School District Superintendent Eimear O’Brien previously launched her challenge to Cantwell-Copher, setting up a race for a position that does not usually draw heated campaigns.

  • Parlier Unified Assistant Superintendent Johnny Alvarado also kicked off his bid midway through 2025.

What we’re watching: Cantwell-Copher’s current term ends next January.
