Brandon Vang still in position for outright win for Fresno City Council

While Brandon Vang’s lead took a slight hit on Thursday, he still has enough of the vote to avoid a runoff.

Brandon Vang continues to be on his way to an outright victory in his race for the Fresno City Council in District 5.

Vang, a Sanger Unified School District trustee, remained above the 50% threshold with the latest vote count on Thursday.

Where the results stand: Vang now leads all candidates with 50.14% of the vote, down slightly from the 50.5% share that he held on Tuesday night.

  • Fresno Unified trustee Elizabeth Jonasson Rosas, the wife of former southeast Fresno councilman Luis Chavez, is at 34.97% of the vote.
  • Jose Leon Barraza is third with no chance of making a runoff at 12.31%, followed by Paul Condon at 0.24%.
  • Write-in candidate Nickolas Wildstar received 0.22%.

What we’re watching: The Fresno County Elections office will provide its next update on March 26, with less than 200 ballots in total that can make a difference in the race.

  • There are 10 conditional voter registration and provisional ballots to count and 20 ballots that require duplication.
  • There are also 140 ballots that could be counted if signature cure letters are turned in by April 2.
  • That leaves a path for the other candidates to pick up enough of the vote share to put Vang under 50%, which would force a runoff between him and Jonasson.
