Big Fresno Fair expands horse racing to 14 days

Horse racing at the Fresno Fairgrounds will now take place across multiple weekends in September, along with the usual schedule in October when the fair is running.

The Big Fresno Fair will have 14 days of live horse racing for the first time in its history.

The 2024 race days will be double the number that the fair had in 2023.

The big picture: The 2024 race dates will start in September before the Big Fresno Fair actually begins.

  • The pre-fair races will take place from Sep. 13 to Sep. 15, Sep. 21, Sep. 22, Sep. 28 and Sep. 29.
  • Once the fair opens up in October, the races will happen from Oct. 4 to Oct. 6 and Oct. 11 to Oct. 14.

Driving the news: The expanded races was made possible after the California Horse Racing Board approved plans by the California Authority of Racing Fairs to create year-round racing in Northern California.

What we’re watching: Pre-sale tickets went on sale to Big Fair Fan Club members on Monday, which will be open until Sunday.

  • Tickets will go on sale to the general public on July 22 at 10 a.m.

What they’re saying: “We are thrilled to host 14 days of live horse racing in Fresno this year,” said Christina Estrada, Interim CEO of The Big Fresno Fair, in a statement. “Horse racing has an over 100-year history at our Fair and our community always shows up to support this longstanding tradition. As the only fair between Los Angeles and Sacramento with live horse racing, we bring something unique for our community to do! We have some fun-themed days at the races planned – so whether you’re a longtime horse racing fan or just curious about what it’s all about – mark your calendars and come support this expanded race meet. Let’s show the state how strong racing in Fresno is!”
