Clovis to hold hearings over new city council districts

The city is changing over from an at-large system for the city council in the face of potential litigation.

Clovis will hold a series of hearings and workshops for the public to be involved in the transition from the at-large city council system to districts.

The city is encouraging its residents to be involved in drawing the first district map.

The backstory: In August, the city received a letter from the Southwest Voter Registration Education Project alleging that the city was in violation of the California Voting Rights Act of 2001 and needed to convert to district elections to comply.

  • The Clovis City Council begrudgingly voted 4-1 to approve the change in October since no local government across California has defended such a lawsuit.
  • Clovis already held one hearing on Nov. 18 to gather input on drawing the district lines.

What we’re watching: The second public hearing is scheduled for Dec. 16 at 6 p.m. at the Clovis City Council Chambers.

  • Clovis will hold a community workshop on Jan. 9 at 6 p.m. at the Clovis Transit Center.
  • The remaining three hearings will be scheduled from January to early March.
