Former Kern County Republican treasurer pleads guilty to bank fraud

The former treasurer stole hundreds of thousands of dollars from the Kern County Republican Central Committee.

The former treasurer of the Kern County Republican Central Committee pleaded guilty to bank fraud in federal court. 

Bryan Williams, 41, now faces decades in prison for stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars from the committee. 

The big picture: While serving as the treasurer from 2013 to 2019, Williams stole between $230,000 and $435,000. 

  • The U.S. Department of Justice said Williams used the stolen money for personal use. 
  • He already was fined by the Federal Election Commission in 2022 after admitting to embezzling $272,000. 

What we’re watching: Williams will be sentenced in court on Jan. 27, 2025. 

  • He faces a maximum of 30 years in prison and a $1 million fine.
