Tulare County Board of Supervisors appoints new health officer

Tulare County has not had a health officer since Dr. Haught retired two years ago.

Dr. Asma Tariq has been appointed as the new Health Officer for Tulare County.

The Tulare County Board of Supervisors voted 5-0 on Feb. 11 to confirm Tariq in the position.

The big picture: Tariq fills a position that had been vacant since Dr. Karen Haught retired in 2023.

  • She is a practicing family medicine physician and a faculty member for the Kaweah Health Family Medicine Residency Program. Tariq also is a volunteer faculty member at the University of Southern California.
  • She will oversee all public health initiatives in Fresno County and lead the Tulare County Public Health Department in collaboration with partners to help improve health outcomes in the county.

What they’re saying: “Dr. Tariq recognizes the diverse needs of our underserved population. She has provided clinical services to our county residents for twelve years and understands the importance of preventative care and health education,” said Tulare County Public Health Director. “I look forward to her joining the Tulare County Public Health team and the commitment she brings to improve the well-being of our community.”
