Fresno State hires new library dean

The university has a permanent dean in time for the new school year after a 17-month search.

The Fresno State Library has a new dean taking over this month.

The library announced Monday that Janet Crum is taking over as dean, coming to Fresno State from the University of Arizona.

The big picture: It’s a return to the Central Valley for Crum, who received a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of the Pacific before heading to the University of Washington for her master’s in library science.

  • Crum was the director of the Health Sciences at the University of Arizona, which followed leadership roles at Northern Arizona University, City of Hope National Medical Center and Oregon Health & Science University.

Go deeper: Fresno State has capped its 17-month search for its next library dean by hiring Crum.

  • Bernadette Muscate, the dean of Undergraduate Studies, filled in as the interim library dean over the last year and a half.

What they’re saying: Fresno State said in a statement that Crum discovered her passion for library science when she was a student assistant in Special Collections at the University of the Pacific.

  • She developed an ability to decipher John Muir’s handwriting while she served in that position.
  • Crumbs said she enjoys writing fiction, gardening, hiking and traveling in her free time.
  • “Janet Crum brings with her a wealth of experience and leadership skills,” said Fresno State Provost Xuanning Fu. “Our library will flourish under her direction, as will research, teaching and learning all across Fresno State.”
