The event was marred by violence just a few years after a similar incident at the same location.

Several people were shot during a Juneteenth celebration in Oakland on Wednesday.

The celebration turned violent during a sideshow involving motorbikes and vehicles on the north side of Lake Merritt, Oakland police said.

The big picture: The shooting occurred around 8:45 p.m. after a fight broke out down the street, resulting in multiple shots being fired.

  • While it is unclear how many people were injured, several individuals were struck by gunfire and taken to the hospital. No deaths were reported.
  • As officers attempted to ensure the safety of the crowd, some people assaulted OPD officers. At least one person was taken into custody for assaulting an officer.
  • Police responded with around two dozen vehicles and multiple ambulances.
