California Gov. Gavin Newsom issued an order on Thursday that all Californians wear face coverings in public settings.
The order comes shortly after one major California county – Orange County – rolled back its face mask requirement.
The order has no details as to enforcement of the mask mandate and is mum on potential penalties for violators.
In a statement, Newsom said that the growing disregard for mask-wearing as California rapidly reopens is threatening to reverse the state’s gains.
“Simply put, we are seeing too many people with faces uncovered — putting at risk the real progress we have made in fighting the disease,” Newsom said in a statement. “California’s strategy to restart the economy and get people back to work will only be successful if people act safely and follow health recommendations. That means wearing a face covering, washing your hands and practicing physical distancing.”
