LA deputy mayor investigated for City Hall bomb threat

The deputy mayor’s home was searched by the FBI as part of the investigation.

FBI agents conducted a search at the home of Brian K. Williams, the deputy mayor for public safety in Los Angeles, in connection with an investigation regarding a bomb threat against City Hall.

The big picture: Mayor Karen Bass’s office confirmed that Williams was the subject of the investigation, which stemmed from an alleged bomb threat against City Hall earlier this year.

  • The Los Angeles Police Department revealed that the source of the threat was likely Williams, prompting them to refer the case to the FBI for further investigation.

What they’re saying: Williams’ attorney maintained his client’s innocence to the LA Times and noted that Williams was cooperating with investigators.

  • A spokesperson for Bass said Williams has been placed on administrative leave.
  • “The Mayor takes this matter very seriously,” the spokesperson said said in a statement. “When the threat was reported, LAPD investigated and determined there was no immediate danger. Following additional investigation, LAPD referred this matter to the FBI for further investigation.”

Driving the news: Williams, who has a background in public service and previously served as a deputy mayor from 2001 to 2005, has been a key figure in areas such as police hiring, public safety spending, and the search for a new police chief during his tenure.
