Popular candy maker Jelly Belly is laying off dozens of employees at its Bay Area headquarters.

Jelly Belly issued a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act notice revealing that 69 employees are losing their jobs at the Fairfield headquarters.

The big picture: The company said in the letter that the layoffs are expected to be permanent.

  • Overall, the job cuts will result in an 18% reduction in Jelly Belly’s Fairfield workforce.
  • The jobs getting cut include web developers, customer service representatives and accountants.

What we’re watching: The layoffs will begin on June 1 and run through January of next year.

Driving the news: The layoffs come three years after Ferrara Candy Company acquired Jelly Belly.

  • Fairfield City Manager David Gassaway told the City Council that the layoffs were expected based on what Ferrara Candy Company told the city when the company acquired Jelly Belly. Gassaway said impacted employees will be eligible for relocation benefits to other Ferrara facilities.

Zoom out: Other layoffs across California include in the wine industry, including E. & J. Gallo shutting down Ranch Winery in St. Helena.
