“Gay people are literally taking over the National Park System”: Pride celebration hits Yosemite

Environmental activist and drag queen Pattie Gonia brought plenty of eyeballs to a National Park Service Pride Celebration at Yosemite.

Yosemite National Park held its third-annual Pride event for employees, bringing in a wide array of LGBT activists to the central California national park.

Promotion for the Pride celebration has, predictably, raised eyebrows.

Driving the news: Yosemite’s under-the-radar Pride celebration gained many more eyeballs following the marketing of environmental activist and drag queen “Pattie Gonia,” who published visuals from the event on her TikTok and Instagram in recent weeks.

  • In one video, the drag queen remarked that NPS staff were “community organizers in the park system” who were making safe spaces for queer people.
  • The drag queen has partnered with outdoor brand, The North Face, for a marketing tour dubbed the Summer of Pride, featuring LGBT-centric events tied to outdoor activities.

What they’re saying: “Gay people are literally taking over the National Park System,” the drag queen and activist said in a social media post. “Mother Nature is a lesbian.”

  • “Now even our National Parks are hosting drag queens for ‘Pride Month,'” Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk wrote in a social media post deriding the celebration.
