California OKs ID cards to Google Wallet

While people will still need to carry their ID cards for law enforcement, airports will accept the digital version.

Californians can now add their digital driver’s license and state ID cards to Google Wallet on mobile devices.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced the development on Friday.

The big picture: This new feature makes California one of five states to offer a digital driver’s license in Google Wallet.

  • The announcement follows the governor’s previous statement that the same feature will also be available for iPhone users, although no specific rollout date for Apple products has been announced.
  • Users will be able to present their digital driver’s license or ID card stored in Google Wallet or Apple Wallet at select businesses, Transportation Security Administration (TSA) airport security checkpoints and in select apps.

Go deeper: The digital licenses or ID cards do not replace the need to carry a physical card, as they are not yet accepted by law enforcement, state government agencies, or some businesses.

What they’re saying: “It’s never been easier to keep a digital driver’s license and identification card in California,” Newsom said. “The state continues to work to offer convenience for those opting into the mobile driver’s license program, now with the option of using Google Wallet.”
