Gallo eyes selling SLO County winery

Wineries on California’s Central Coast are facing financial pressures, even those owned by the biggest winemakers in the world.

Modesto-based beverage giant E&J Gallo announced their intent to offload the home base of one of its wine brands on California’s Central Coast.

Edna Valley Vineyard and Winery’s home on the southern end of San Luis Obispo will, eventually, be no more, the company announced this week.

Driving the news: Gallo announced the move after assessing its land holdings and portfolio of wineries, opting to sell the vineyard and its tasting room on Biddle Ranch Road in San Luis Obispo.

  • Despite the sale, the vineyard’s name will live as Gallo plans to sell wines under both the Edna Valley Vineyard and The Language of Yes brands.
  • Grapes from Gallo’s “variety of vineyard properties” will be used in the brands’ wines moving forward.

Rethinking buying spree: In recent years, Gallo has bought up properties throughout the Central Coast of California, including the William Hill Estate Winery in Napa.

  • The company’s portfolio includes brands like Apothic, Barefoot, La Marca, Manischewitz, Prophecy, Proverb, Talbott Vineyards, and more, sourced from throughout California and the United States, as well as some other international locales.
  • Founded by Jack Niven in the 1980s, the Edna Valley Vineyard has specialized in the region’s signature Chardonnay wines for three decades.
  • Gallo acquired the Edna Valley Vineyard property in 2011 and has grown to have a large footprint in San Luis Obispo County, where it was the sixth-largest property taxpayer in the 2022-23 fiscal year.

More trouble in Paso: Vintage Wine Estates, owner of Laetitia Vineyard and Winery in Arroyo Grande, is filing for bankruptcy and announced mass layoffs, leaving Laetitia’s future in doubt.

  • Derby Wine Estates in Paso Robles is looking to sell the iconic Farmers Alliance building, which is home to its wine processing facility and tasting room while downsizing its operation.
